Resolutions

I've been thinking about resolutions this past week. I've had a hard time coming up with those tiny steps I mentioned for some of the resolutions, but here's what I have so far:

1. Avoid buying any product with High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS). This is my tiny step towards continued healthy eating. John and I discussed this resolution the most and this step that we came up with is not only something we've been wanting to do but we figured it killed 2 birds with one stone because most likely a brand or product that goes out of it's way to be HFCS free might also have gone other chemical free. I know already that giving up HFCS in products means giving up a favorite, inexpensive pizza. Fortunately my ultimate favorite frozen pizza, Home Runn Inn, is very all natural without preservatives or HFCS.
2. Turn off the computer on a daily basis. I'm not sure if this means turning it off at 8 am, turning it back on quickly at noonish to check email then turn it back off right after, on again at 4 pm to check again or if it means just turning it off at 12 pm or maybe for the day at 8 am til 4 pm. Not sure what it's going to evolve into but this is something I've done in the past and it helps control my computer addiction. I have a horrible tendency to want to do something-play with my daughter or housework, etc, and instead gravitate to the computer only to spend 30-60 minutes on it before I know it. Turning it off for several hours helps control that. My goal is every week day to do this to some degree.
3. Spend 15 minutes each morning doing general tidying. This is the small step towards keeping my house neat in a maintenance phase. I've already started to do this and I'm finding that it is actually really easy. I always have 15 minutes in the morning, even when we have to be somewhere. 15 minutes is long enough to accomplish something-emptying the dishwasher or filling it up-and yet short enough that I'm not late to where I'm going or Anne has a hard time waiting for me. In addition to this small step, my general goal is to read through Peter Walsh's book and follow those steps he's laid out.
4. I still have the goal to be closer to my husband in all aspects, but I have no clue what steps to take to achieve this-especially with Baby coming and limiting our alone time both at home and out.
5. I also still have the goal to deepen my relationship with God through prayer, Bible reading as well as other ways to continue to learn about my faith as I have the past 6-12 months. Again, I'm not sure what the small step is because first of all, I know I will not stick to something daily and second of all, I have no clue how Baby is going to throw this off for me once he/she makes his appearance.
6. A final goal I've thrown in is to spend less money on groceries. I think I've mentioned before this is one area I have complete control and since I'm not bringing in a pay check this is one way I can "earn" money for my family by spending less on groceries. I want to be more efficient in using what I already have at home, taking advantage of sales (grapes for $.99/lb last week!), and finding meals to cook that are naturally lower cost.

So although these might seem like a lot of goals this new year, especially with Baby coming (did I say that already?), they are things that have been on my mind the past few months. So they aren't new things, I'm just finally writing them down and have something to work towards. Hopefully in a few months or next year I can look back and say I made some progress on them-despite Baby coming (I did say that, right?).

One way to spend a lot less on groceries is to make a lot of soup!

I remembered something else that may help. Although you probably already know it. Day A: make a whole roasted chicken and serve it with economical sides. Day B: cut up the remaining meat into small peices from the chicken and turn that into soup. Broth is quite inexpensive or you can use buillon cubes which costs even less. I have a great recipie for a lemon chicken soup that I'm making tonight with a leftover rotissere chicken. You'd need broth, lemon juice, carrots, spinch, onions, orzo, and chicken. Very yummy and nutritious! Andrina loves this little medly (I strain out the broth so she gets more solids and Tom and I have more broth). Let me know if you want the recipie.
