Well, John and I have decided to pack up our cloth diapers for now. We have decided we are done with them for Anne. For the first probably 6-9 months of her life, she was almost completely cloth diapered. By her first birthday I think I had only bought maybe 2-3 packages of disposable diapers in her life. As she started to get older, we started to get more lazy. It began to take us several days, sometimes even a week to put together the diapers to actually use after washing. The elastic in our diapers wore us, causing almost constant leaking. Our percentage of cloth to disposable went from 100% cloth, 0% disposable, slowly down to 1-2% cloth and 98-99% disposable. After wrestling with it for the past several months, both of us dragging our feet but secretly just wanting to be done, I asked John if we should just pack them away and wait to use them for the next baby. Without hesitation, John agreed.
So, here's our battle plan for when we have a second baby and wrestle with cloth diapers again. We will use Kissaluvs, which are a fitted diaper that require a cover for at least the first few months. We used these with Anne for probably 2 months and they worked GREAT! No leaks, held everything in and were very easy to use. If we decide to continue cloth diapering after those 2 months, then I think we will get some more fitted diapers. I found a lady on Ebay who makes some fitted ones that held up to my almost 2 year olds pee and poop so I think I would buy from her again. So basically, we will absolutely use cloth for at least the first couple of months and hopefully use it past that. I think part of our problem is John and I, while not necessarily procrastinators, put things off and are lazy. So clothes that went on the floor after wearing on Monday are still happily in that same spot on Friday. So having diapers that need to be assembled at all means we don't get to it for several days after they are washed. I think next time we will use fitted diapers with a cover 100%. They are very easy-basically just wash, dry then stick in the basket to use. Unlike our Bum Genius diapers which required us to wash, dry, assemble and then put in the basket to use. So anyway, that's our story of cloth. This chapter in Anne's life is over, our now 100% disposable diapered babe.
PS. I will be selling our Bum Genius on craigslist (ebay no longer permits the sale of used cloth diapers). Most of them need elastic in the legs replaced. I'll be selling them half price of what they would cost new. They are in great condition and have been used anywhere from 6 months to 1 year on one child sporadically. The only issue is the elastic in the legs needing to be replaced. So....if you are interested in buying, let me know! I also have some doublers I'll be selling on craigslist or ebay as well. (Hehe, a little self promotion there!)
