Now that I'm feeling better (with nausea) I'm trying to get my family back on track with our "semi-veg" (that's what I'm going to call our efforts to cut out meat from our diet-not entirely but cutting it back ideally by about 75%). It is pretty hard especially when we go out to eat because there are very few vegetarian options. And, to boot, John and I have gone out to eat quite a lot in the past few weeks for a variety of reasons. So it seems like every time we make some progress in this semi-veg, within a few days there's some meal to throw us off. I'd love it if out of 21 meals a week we had maybe 2 or 3 (and 3 sounds high to me) that had meat in it. So far we're probably averaging 5-7 meals with meat. At least double what I would prefer.
Today is a perfect example. I'm meeting a friend for lunch. I just looked up the place online and under the restaurant name on their menu it says "Ribs*Beef*Burgers*Beer". Yeah, not exactly a step forward in the semi-veg department. I read the menu and although there is a grilled veggie sandwich, and those are usually tasty, the Santa Fe salad looks better to me. But of course, it has grilled chicken on it and for $7 I'm not going to request they take it off. Yesterday I had soup with turkey in it. Wednesday I had a Lunchable (I know I'm not supposed to have lunch meat. Oh well.). Sigh, we aren't making much progress, are we? On the plus side, I haven't cooked meat in our dinners for a long, long time. In fact in the 6 weeks we've been trying to implement this, I've probably only used meat like 2 or 3 times in my cooking. So that's good that when I cook at least we are able to stay on track.

OMG-I know what resturant that was-it was Portillo's, right? They have the absolute best cheesburgers and ribs. SOOOO good-definately worth falling off the veggie track for. If you're going to have food like that, that is the place it is so good it is worth it!
Pregnancy info: there is a brand of lunchmeat with no preseratives in it, so it is totally safe to eat while pregnant (no nitrates!). It is called Hormel Naturals. It's packaged by the other deli meats and it's in a brown paper package.
