You decide...
Today after breakfast Anne said she wanted to watch TV. We've been soooo lax on the TV lately. Anyway, that's another blog. We said yes and I told her the list of shows she could watch. She wanted to watch Caillou. John went through the list of shows saved on the DVR while Anne kept saying she wanted to watch Caillou and we kept saying we were getting it for her. John moved the cursor over Caillou then accidentally moved it down one more space, getting it off Caillou. Anne threw a fit! She started to scream and cry saying No she wanted to watch Caillou. So my question is did she somehow know that John was on Caillou and move off of it (ie, "read" the word Caillou) or was it a complete fluke that she happened to throw a temper tantrum as soon as John moved off of Caillou? Weird.

Ironically, I've heard other people tell this same story - that their pre-reading kids could recognize the word of their favorite shows on the DVR.
I've actually learned that this is pretty typical pre-reading behavior, and when you think about it, it makes sense. When she watches Calliou, she see's that name on the screen. Its not much different than when they see the color blue and hear us say "blue" or see a tractor and hear us say "tractor." I've learned from teacher friends that you should point to words while you say them at this age, because kids are so attuned to memorizing what things are called - even spelled out words.
Asher has been ALL about letters these past few months - its his newest passion, so I've been trying this out.
Sorry for the long comment, but I'm fascinated by it!
what is a dvr? in fact, what is cable?
Actually, the other day we spelled something out and she immediately said she wanted what we had spelled out. So she catches on quick!
I was going to say what Catherine said. Was she able to enjoy her show without a temper-tantrum?
