I am reading a book on vegetarianism. It is written by a doctor. So for all you out there skeptical that a vegetarian could get good nutrition, the author of this book has credentials. She talks a lot about how vegetarians can easily have better nutrition than meat-eaters (because we are replacing meat with more nutritious veggies and fruits and whole grains) and how getting enough protein really isn't an issue. Veggies, fruits, beans and whole grains have anywhere from 15-40% protein. So as long as you are smart about your choices and aren't eating french fries everyday, you should be fine.
Here's a big "Did you know"...The American panel of foodies (ok, I have no clue what they are called but the guys who tell us how much of what to eat) say a non pregnant, non nursing woman should get 50 g of protein a day. Now here's the "did you know"...The World Health Organization, whom I put a LOT more stock into for a lot of various reasons (one being they take into account the entire world and the entire world as a whole is doing a lot better than America is on most issues dealing with health) says we only need 25 g of protein. Hmm...interesting. So who I am I going to believe? The Americans who are being paid by meat farmers or the World Health Organization whom as far as I can tell is getting no tangible benefits for their recommendations? The choice, for me, is obvious. Still I find it quite interesting that given that "small" amount of recommendation for protein it would easily be met by anyone who eats any sort of moderately healthy diet. I no longer have fears that if we went vegetarian we wouldn't get enough protein in our diet.

Did you read the posts I did on possibly going veg a few months back? I was nearly ready to take the plunge when I found out I was pregnant and decided that was NOT the time to make such a huge change in my diet. But when this season passes to the next...I think I'll be there, like it or not...
do it, dude. seriously. its fun. you eat so much better...lets talk about it tomorrow.
