Today is day 2 of weaning Anne from the bottle. This is something we have tossed around in our heads for the past few months but hadn't come to any firm conclusion. Yesterday while at Wally World (aka Walmart-we have nicknames for almost everything), I saw a sippy cup with a straw in it. I bought it and decided to give it a chance with Anne for switching her to milk in that instead of her beloved bobbie (yet another nickname). I talked up the cup while in the store and on the way home, talking about how cool and pretty the cup was and what a big girl cup it was.
So for naptime, I offered it to Anne with milk in it. Previously, if a droplet of milk touched her lips that was not in a bottle (or my breast when she was a baby), she would reject it immediately and refuse any more. While continuing to talk up the cup with the cool big girl straw, I offered Anne some milk in it. Anne drank it! Didn't reject it at all! Not even the tiniest amount of protest. She drank about half the milk, albeit a bit less enthusiastically than she does from her bottle. Score: Cup-1, Bottle-0.
Last night I was away at a work function and John gave her milk in the cup for bed. She wouldn't take it and cried for about five minutes straight for her bobbie. After trying to console her and finding nothing worked, John just put her in her crib and gave up. Score: Cup-1, Bottle-1
This morning, of course, the first thing Anne asked for was her bobbie. We again offered her the cool big girl cup full of milk. She took a few sips and was pretty much done. No crying, but not enthusiastic about it either. Today for naps was pretty much the same thing. Score: Remains at Bottle-1, Cup-1.
So while not meaning to do it at all, we have started weaning her from the bottle. Sigh. I'm just glad she isn't putting up more of a fight because I would seriously turn back. Although with 4 bottle-to-cup experiences under our belt, I think we are actually going to stick with this and the bottles, or beloved bobbies to all of us at the Atwood household, are going to be extinct in the very near future...
