When did this happen?
Up until a week or so ago, Anne has been fairly incapible of willfulness-meaning, anything that she has done to bother or annoy me has been purely on accident, and in no way a logical choice on her part. Well, about a week ago, I first noticed her personality-or willfulness if you will-show the first signs of emerging. We were playing in the tub, and I took a toy away from her to show her how it worked. As soon as I took it away she vigorously started waving her hands around and making crying/fussing/whining noises. As soon as I gave the toy back to her she was immediately quiet. I thought to myself "Uh oh, is this what toddlerhood is going to look like?". More signs have started to emerge in the past few days or weeks. Another example is that she refuses to eat certain foods (usually vegetables). She does well for a few bites, but after that if she does not like something she turns her head away or litterally pushes my hand away! But if I offer her something she does like in the next bite she willingly will eat it. The way we have been getting her to eat her veggies lately is a bite or two of what she does like (usually yogurt or cheese!) and then a quick, sneak bite of veggies, followed by another quick bite of her favorite food. But tonight was definately the worst. I served her a sweet potato sort of custard I made. It's made w/ sweet potatoes, bananas, even some brown sugar. I also gave her some finger food of cooked broccoli florets. This girls held every single bite of food in her mouth, slowly letting it drip out in between bites! She at one point had her whole mouth completely full! Even offering juice, yogurt and cheese did not make her swallow what she didn't like. This girl is so good that I gave her a bite of cheese and she was able to eat around it and still keep the broccoli floret in her mouth!! When I took her out of the high chair she still had a complete mouth full of food. I foolishly thought that she would swallow it. So I put her on the floor with some toys and walked away. When I returned moments later she had spit everything in her mouth out onto herself and the floor!! There is a reason that Jesus made babies so cute, because as I see this food on the floor, she looks up at me with those big, innocent blue eyes and I of course melted and could not stay angry with her. Sigh...I am certainly worried for when she gets older. But on the other hand, at that point she will understand cause and effect and maybe I can figure out a way to get her to eat her veggies...Anne-there are some time outs with your name written all over them...

Ah...she is becoming a real person! Toddlerdum is still far off...don't worry yet. Enjoy those big blue eyes...sometimes their charm isn't enough when they are two. ;-)
How funny about being able to eat the cheese and not swallow the broccoli--very clever trick.
